This past weekend, we went on a road trip to Southern Arizona.  Amado to be exact.  This weekend that sleepy little town hosted the Overland Expo

Overland Expo is a three day event that encourages people to get outside and explore our great world.  And I do mean explore!  Explore as in crossing the Sahara.  Explore as in going from Alaska to the southern tip of South America.  Explore as in being reliant completely on oneself – no tour, no spa, sometimes…no map!

There were vehicles like the one above that left no doubt you would arrive at your destination.  All the comforts of home, complete with solar powered shower and a GPS.  This particular behemoth was even for sale!  Asking price – a mere $179,000.

There were smaller ones, for people who wanted a bit more maneuverability, and didn’t need to be quite so self contained.  Still all the comforts of home.  A place for everything, all tucked away nice and neat.  Heck, even the stereo wasn’t bad.

Then again, a body might want to feel the wind in their hair.

The Expo was an outdoor gear junkies heaven.  I know what you’re thinking – it’s all stuff for guys! Not true!

There was Carla King, who journeyed around China on her trusty side-car motorcycle – a ChangChing!  There was Lois Pryce, who rode her nimble little 225cc motorcycle from England to South Africa.  Solo.

Very different and unusual.  Nothing run of the mill.  Am I likely to chuck corporate employment in favor of a two-wheeled adventure?  No.  Still, it’s fun to dream – and support those with the courage to do so.
